Applications for 2020-2021 Tucson Philharmonia membership will be take place through online video auditions only.

Submissions will be accepted beginning Saturday, August 1, 2020 until Saturday, August 29 at 6 pm.

Auditions will be held for the following instruments:
WOODWINDS: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
BRASS: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba
STRINGS: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Auditions will be held for the spring semester only if vacancies exist.

Membership Application: The Membership Application can be mailed in or download, complete by computer using Adobe Acrobat, and email to info@TPYO.org

The deadline for submission of the Application Form and the online video audition is Saturday, August 29 at 6:00PM.

Professional musicians will judge the auditions and placement into the orchestra will be based on the ability level demonstrated by the audition. Each applicant will receive a written evaluation of the audition.

Tucson area and other Southern Arizona musicians through high school age (18 years of age) are eligible for membership in the Tucson Philharmonia.

Also eligible are previous Philharmonia members up to age 21.

There is no minimum age for membership, but applicants in grades 8 and lower may audition only with a brief recommendation letter emailed to info@TPYO.org from their private teacher.

Musicians who are previous TPYO members and still meet the eligibility requirements can request a position in the 2020-2021 Philharmonia - WITHOUT a re-audition - by submitting the Application Form by Saturday, August 29.

NOTE: Since the 2020-2021 TPYO Roster will be determined by September 1 - even if the start of rehearsals is delayed - make sure that you submit your application (by mail or email) by the deadline date of Saturday, August 29.

Online Audition Requirements

Solo piece of the applicant's choice (any section, totaling 2-3 minutes) demonstrating musical and technical abilities, played without accompaniment. Instead of one solo piece, applicants may play two or three contrasting regional or all-state etudes, orchestral excerpts, or other etudes (totaling 2-3 minutes).red.

Percussionists must demonstrate skills in the two basic areas: snare drum and mallets (xylophone - two mallets), with a maximum of three minutes per area. If possible, a short timpani piece (etude or orchestral excerpt) can also be included.

As appropriate for applicant's instrument, two or three octave major scales in the keys of Eb and A, played at moderate tempo, with any desired articulation or bowing. Percussionists should play the two scales on the xylophone.

Sight-reading will not be required for the 2020-2021 online auditions.

The audition results and the 2020-2021 orchestra roster will be mailed to each applicant on September 1.

Seating/Playing Assignments
Seating assignments in the string sections and playing assignments in the wind/percussion sections will be determined by music checks utilizing excerpts from the performance repertoire. Music checks will be held after the orchestra rehearsals begin.
